The Retiro district takes its name from the Palacio del Buen Retiro, built by order of Philip IV in the 1630s as a royal retreat. Charles III opened the gardens to the public in 1767, and in 1868 the park passed to the city. In July 2021, the Paseo del Prado-Buen Retiro axis was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the "Landscape of Light", a designation covering 200 hectares with 109 catalogued elements.

Its premium barrios (Jerónimos, Ibiza and Niño Jesús) offer an extremely high-demand property market. Jerónimos averages €8,200-8,750/m², exceeding €10,000/m² for unique properties. In February 2026, the most expensive flat in Madrid's history sold in Jerónimos: €20.9 million for 1,000 m² overlooking the Botanical Garden. The Art Triangle concentrates three world-class museums within one kilometre: the Museo del Prado (Velázquez, Goya, El Greco), the Museo Reina Sofía (Picasso's Guernica) and the Thyssen-Bornemisza. CaixaForum Madrid, a former power station converted by Herzog & de Meuron, completes the cultural offering. The Royal Botanical Garden (1781) houses over 5,000 species.

Retiro Park defines the district's quality of life: 125 hectares with the 1887 Crystal Palace, the Great Pond, the Rose Garden and the Fallen Angel. The Deessa restaurant (Mandarin Oriental Ritz, two Michelin stars) and the classic Horcher (facing the park since 1952) place gastronomy on par with the surroundings. Atocha station connects to all of Spain by high-speed rail.
