Barrio de las Letras is Madrid's literary soul. Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo and Góngora lived and wrote here; their verses are engraved in the pavement of Calle Huertas and Lope's house-museum remains open on the street that now bears his rival's name.

Plaza de Santa Ana, presided over by the Teatro Español and the ME Madrid hotel (the former Reina Victoria), articulates a quarter of century-old taverns, antique dealers and boutique hotels preserving the Golden Age street plan.

Its rehabilitated buildings, lofts in former workshops and penthouses overlooking old Madrid's rooftops attract a cosmopolitan buyer: Paseo del Prado, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is literally one street away.
